How do you download a GIF from X?

To download a GIF from X, copy the link to the post, paste it into the box above and press Download as GIF.

xsavr turns the clip into a looping .gif file inside your browser and saves it to your Downloads folder in a few seconds. It steps through the clip at 12 frames a second and gives each frame its own palette of up to 256 colours, the most a GIF can hold. The GIF is up to 480 pixels wide and 15 seconds long, and a longer clip comes as an MP4. The Download button saves the clip as X stores it. X keeps every GIF as a short MP4, so that file is smaller and sharper than the .gif made from it. xsavr reads public posts from x.com and twitter.com and is free to use.

From post to GIF file

  1. Copy the link

    In the X app, tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar.

  2. Paste it above

    Put the link in the box at the top of this page and press Download. The GIF gets its own row.

  3. Press Download as GIF

    A progress count runs for a few seconds, then your browser saves the .gif file.

Links from x.com and twitter.com both work.

Which button do I press?

  • Videos

    The first button is the largest size. Smaller ones follow when X stored them.

  • GIFs

    A GIF downloads as the MP4 X stores, or as a .gif file with Download as GIF.

  • Photos

    A photo saves as a JPG at its original size, bigger than the preview in your timeline.

Saved posts are public, so save only what you are happy to see on a public page. The media belongs to whoever posted it.

Which links work

If a link gives no result, check it against this list.

Public posts. xsavr reads posts from public accounts. Posts from private accounts stay out of reach.

Posts that still exist. Once X removes a post, xsavr can no longer fetch it. A post you saved on xsavr first keeps opening.

Links to one post. Copy the link from the post itself, not from a profile. It contains /status/ and a long number.

Posts with media. Download needs a photo, video or GIF. For a post that is only text, press Save to keep it.

Regular posts. Save keeps regular posts and threads. Long-form articles are not supported yet.

How do I save a GIF from an X post?

Paste the post link into the box on this page and press Download. When the GIF appears, press Download as GIF for a .gif file or Download for the MP4.

Why is the GIF file bigger than the MP4?

A GIF stores each frame as a separate picture with at most 256 colours. An MP4 compresses the frames together. The same clip as a GIF is usually several times larger and its colours are a little rougher.

Which should I pick, GIF or MP4?

Pick GIF when the place you are posting it asks for a .gif file. Pick MP4 to watch or share the clip, since it is smaller and looks better.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds. GIFs on X are usually far shorter. A longer clip is offered as an MP4.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The GIF is made in your phone's browser, so an older phone may take a little longer.

Which posts can I use?

Posts from public accounts, with a link from x.com or twitter.com.
